Do Soil PH Meters Work in Water?

Most basic soil pH meters do not work properly in water. A simple probe made for direct contact with soil should usually stay out of buckets, tanks, rain barrels, and other liquids unless its instructions clearly say it can test water.

There is an important exception. Some electronic pH meters use an electrode that is designed for liquids as well as moist soil or soil-and-water mixtures. Those meters can work in water when the manufacturer allows it.

Why Most Soil pH Meters Do Not Work in Water

Many low-cost soil testers use one or two metal probes. You push the probes into damp soil and the meter responds to the electrical conditions around them.

The soil needs to be moist enough to make good contact with the probe. The meter is designed around that soil contact.

Putting the same probe into a glass of water changes the conditions completely. The reading may:

  • Stay near one value.
  • Drift up or down.
  • Change when you move the probe.
  • Give a number that looks believable but is not reliable.

Some soil meters are also not waterproof. A manufacturer may specifically warn against using the probe or meter body in water. One soil-meter manual, for example, states that the tester is for soil and not for water or other liquids.

So a soil meter displaying a pH number in water does not automatically mean the number is correct.

Some pH Meters Can Test Both Soil and Water

Not every meter sold for soil works the same way.

A true electronic pH meter may use a glass, flat-surface, or other pH electrode. Depending on the design, that electrode may be suitable for:

  • Water.
  • Nutrient solutions.
  • Moist soil.
  • Soil paste.
  • A soil-and-water mixture.

The meter's instructions are what matter.

Look for wording such as "suitable for liquids" or a specific procedure for measuring water. Do not assume that a device can test water simply because its name includes "pH meter."

What About Mixing Soil With Water?

This causes some confusion because water is commonly used when measuring soil pH.

Many accepted soil-testing methods mix a measured amount of soil with distilled or deionized water. The pH electrode is then placed in the wet mixture, often called a soil slurry or suspension.

Washington State University Extension notes that some pH meters can measure soil directly, while others require a mixture of equal volumes of soil and distilled water.

That does not mean every soil meter can measure plain water.

In a soil slurry, the goal is still to find the soil's pH. The water simply provides a consistent liquid environment so the electrode can make the measurement.

Can You Use a Soil pH Meter to Test Rainwater?

For rainwater, use a meter specifically designed for liquid pH measurement.

This matters even more with relatively clean rainwater because it may have low electrical conductivity. Low-conductivity water contains relatively few dissolved ions. Standard pH electrodes can respond slowly or produce drifting readings under these conditions.

The U.S. Geological Survey notes that accurate pH measurement becomes more difficult in water with low specific conductance because the electrical circuit through the sample is weaker and electrode readings can become unstable.

Rainwater can fall into this difficult category. A cheap soil probe may therefore give an especially questionable result.

If you regularly test rainwater, choose a liquid pH meter that is suitable for the expected water conditions and follow its calibration and storage instructions.

How to Get a More Useful Water pH Reading

Calibrate the meter

Electronic pH meters normally use known buffer solutions for calibration. Calibration tells the meter what a known pH value looks like before you test your sample.

Follow the meter's instructions for:

  • Calibration frequency.
  • Which buffer solutions to use.
  • Electrode rinsing.
  • Electrode storage.
  • Temperature compensation.

Do not assume a meter that reads correctly when new will stay accurate forever.

Give the reading time to stabilize

A water pH reading may move for several seconds or longer before settling.

Use a suitable pH meter for soil and water testing to understand filter stages selected for the household exposure route.

Very low-conductivity water can take longer and may continue drifting. USGS guidance specifically identifies unstable and slow readings as challenges when measuring low-conductivity water.

Keep the sample and probe clean

Residue from soil, fertilizer, previous water samples, or calibration solution can affect the next test.

Rinse and maintain the electrode exactly as the manufacturer recommends.

Test water soon after collecting it

The pH of water can change after sampling because of temperature changes, contact with air, biological activity, and changes in dissolved gases such as carbon dioxide.

For rainwater systems, testing directly from the barrel or tank can also give a different result from testing freshly fallen rain. The roof, gutters, stored sediment, tank materials, and biological activity may all affect the stored water.

Does Water pH Tell You Whether Rainwater Is Safe?

No.

A pH meter tells you about acidity or alkalinity. It does not tell you whether rainwater contains:

  • Harmful bacteria.
  • Parasites.
  • Viruses.
  • Metals.
  • Pesticides.
  • Roof contaminants.
  • Other dissolved chemicals.

A normal-looking pH reading does not make rainwater potable. Potable means suitable for drinking.

If collected rainwater is being considered for drinking, pH is only one small part of a whole-system assessment. Suitable collection surfaces, debris control, first-flush management, treatment, maintenance, current laboratory testing, and local requirements all matter.

What If You Already Put a Soil Meter in Water?

Remove it and check the instructions.

If only the metal portion was briefly dipped into water, the meter may still be fine. Clean and dry it as directed before testing soil again.

If the meter is listed as non-waterproof and water entered the housing, display, switches, or electronics, do not assume it is still accurate. Test it according to the manufacturer's procedure or replace it if you cannot verify its operation.

Avoid opening electrical meters unless the manufacturer specifically provides a user-service procedure.

The Bottom Line

A basic soil pH probe should not normally be used to measure water pH. It is designed to work with damp soil, and some models specifically prohibit liquid testing.
