The similar diameter is why measuring only across the opening is not enough. An S60×6 fitting has much wider thread spacing than NPT or BSP.

Do not force an NPT fitting onto an S60×6 outlet just because it starts to engage. Plastic valve threads can be damaged, and the connection may leak.

Other Threads Found on IBC Tote Valves

S60×6 is very common, but it is not universal.

Depending on the tote manufacturer, valve size, country of origin, and intended use, you may encounter:

NPT or NPS threads

North American totes and replacement valve assemblies may use 2-inch pipe threads. NPT is tapered, while NPS is straight.

These threads are much finer than an S60×6 buttress thread.

You can usually identify the outlet with two measurements.

1. Measure the outside diameter

Measure straight across the outside edges of the male threads.

A caliper gives the easiest measurement, but a ruler can provide a useful first check.

If the diameter is close to 60 mm, you may have S60×6, 2-inch NPT/NPS, or 2-inch BSP. You still need to check the thread spacing.

2. Measure the thread pitch

Measure from the crest of one thread to the crest of the next.

An S60×6 thread should be close to 6 mm between threads. The difference is easy to see because ordinary 2-inch pipe threads are much more closely spaced.

If measuring one thread is difficult, measure across several threads and divide by the number of spaces.

3. Look at the thread shape

S60×6 buttress threads are large and chunky.

There are two connections that are easy to confuse.

The valve outlet is the exposed connection where you normally attach a hose, cap, or adapter.

The valve inlet is the connection that attaches the valve itself to the plastic IBC bottle.

Those two connections do not have to use the same thread.

This matters when replacing the entire valve. Knowing that your hose adapter fits an S60×6 outlet does not necessarily tell you which replacement valve will fit the tank. Some IBC designs use different or manufacturer-specific connections between the bottle and valve.

If you are replacing the whole valve rather than adding an adapter, identify both the tote model and the valve-to-container connection before removing parts.

What Adapter Do You Need for an S60×6 Valve?

Once you know you have an S60×6 outlet, choose an adapter with an S60×6 female connection on the tote side.

The other side depends on what you want to connect.

  • Hose barb
  • NPT pipe thread
  • BSP pipe thread
  • Camlock coupling

For a pump system, check the pump inlet size as well as the thread type. Reducing a large tote outlet to a very small hose can restrict flow and make it harder for the pump to receive enough water.

Does an S60×6 Thread Need Thread Tape?

Normally, an S60×6 buttress fitting seals against a gasket or sealing washer, rather than sealing through the threads themselves. The coarse threads mainly pull the two sealing faces together.

Because of that, wrapping large amounts of PTFE tape around an S60×6 thread is generally not the way to fix a leaking connection.

If an S60×6 adapter leaks, check:

  • Whether the gasket is installed
  • Whether the gasket is damaged or hardened
  • Whether dirt is trapped on the sealing face
  • Whether the fitting is cross-threaded

Avoid Overtightening Plastic IBC Fittings

IBC valves and adapters are commonly made from plastic. More tightening does not always produce a better seal.

If a gasket-style connection leaks after being seated correctly, excessive force can crack the adapter, distort the gasket, or damage the valve threads.

Start fittings by hand so you can tell whether the threads are engaging properly. If the fitting becomes difficult to turn almost immediately, stop and confirm the thread type rather than forcing it.

A Note About IBC Totes Used for Rainwater

If the tote will hold rainwater for garden or household use, the thread type is only one compatibility issue.

You should also know what the tote previously contained. Avoid using a tote with an unknown history or one that previously stored chemicals that are not suitable for your intended water use.

For drinking-water use, an IBC tote, adapter, or filter should never be assumed safe simply because it is described as food-grade. Potable water means water suitable for drinking. A potable rainwater system requires suitable collection and storage materials, appropriate treatment stages, maintenance, current laboratory testing, and compliance with applicable local requirements.
